Perfect Is Overrated: Choose Consistency for Better Health

Why Consistency Beats Perfectionism in Achieving Health Goals

"Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good" especially applies to health goals. While perfectionism often leads to burnout, consistency proves more powerful for lasting change. By focusing on regular, manageable actions rather than flawless execution, you can build sustainable habits and achieve your health goals more effectively.

I’ve always liked the quote, “Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good”. It applies to so many situations, including health goals. Whether you are hoping to eat healthier, exercise more, drink less pop, lose some weight, or get enough sleep it is helpful to remember that perfection isn’t the goal.

No one is perfect, and no one should expect to be perfect, and that’s okay. In fact, you may be more successful in meeting your goals by being imperfect. Hoping for perfection often sets us up for failure; it just takes one misstep to derail your perfect goal. If you slip up on your diet or skip a workout (or two or three…), you might feel like you’ve ruined your progress and decide to throw in the towel and give up.

The problem with perfectionism is that it encourages black-and-white thinking: either we succeed or we fail. This leads to unnecessary pressure, anxiety, and eventually, burnout. Instead of letting one "slip-up" derail your efforts, aim to focus on the next step forward. That’s where consistency comes in.

Consistency may look messy and imperfect, but it will also get the job done. Consistency isn’t about doing everything right every time. It’s about making small, manageable changes over time on a regular basis, which compounds to create lasting results. Here are a few reasons why consistency is a powerful tool in achieving your health goals:

A table showing how consistency leads to success.

1. Builds Positive Habits: When you focus on consistency, you’re not relying on short-term bursts of motivation. Instead, you’re cultivating sustainable habits. Whether it’s walking 10 minutes a day, choosing healthier snacks, or prioritizing sleep, small actions performed regularly turn into lifelong habits. Over time, these habits become second nature, and their impact adds up.

2. Minimizes the Pressure: Perfection puts a heavy mental burden on you. The constant striving for flawless execution can create stress and discourage you when you inevitably fall short. Consistency, however, allows you to embrace the process rather than obsessing over the outcome. You're free to adjust your approach without fear of "failing," and this makes it easier to keep going, even when challenges arise.

3. Encourages Patience: Health improvements take time. Weight loss, fitness gains, and chronic disease management don’t happen overnight. By focusing on consistency, you learn to appreciate gradual progress. Each small step—no matter how minor it seems—builds toward bigger outcomes. With patience, you're more likely to stick with your plan and give it the time it needs to work.

4. Increases Resilience: When you aim for consistency, you’re not expecting to be perfect all the time. Life will always throw challenges your way: busy workdays, vacations, illness, or unexpected events. Instead of letting setbacks stop you, consistency allows you to bounce back quickly. If you miss a day at the gym or eat an indulgent meal, you can simply start again the next day without guilt.

5. Boosts Confidence: The more consistent you are with your health habits, the more confidence you build in yourself. When you see that you’re able to stick with a plan—whether it’s taking your medications as prescribed, walking more, or exercising 3 days a week—you build trust in your ability to follow through. This trust is key to long-term success.

Perfectionism often sets us up for frustration and burnout, while consistency fosters long-term success and personal growth. By focusing on consistent, incremental changes rather than chasing the unattainable ideal of perfection, you're more likely to achieve your health goals and maintain a healthy lifestyle for the long run.

Remember, health is a marathon, not a sprint. Embrace the process (even when it’s messy and painful), be honest with yourself, and celebrate every step forward—even the very small ones. Consistency is the key that unlocks lasting change. Keep going, and you’ll see the results over time.
